DC - DC Converters

A DC-DC converter is a converter used in a 12V or 24V battery system. It has two main functions: either to convert the 24V from the onboard power system to supply 12V consumers such as navigation and communication equipment, or to stabilize the 12 or 24V onboard system. With the Mastervolt converter you can opt for a 24V main battery in any situation, without limiting your use of 12V appliances. Mastervoltís range also includes converters that can change 12V into 24V as well as functioning as a voltage stabilizer, to keep the onboard system at a fixed 12 or 24V DC voltage.
Navigation, communication, and sound equipment will run smoothly, with minimal energy loss due to the switch mode technology applied.

The ëswitch modeí technique

Using a Mastervolt converter eliminates the need for a so-called linear converter. The linear method has a low efficiency (<50%), limited safety for connected appliances and a poor quality DC output voltage. In contrast, Mastervolt's switch mode (high frequency switching technique) ensures your power system is much safer, reliable and efficient. Mastervolt recommends using a 24V system on all vessels of 13m or longer. Using 24V means the cables can be thinner (lighter in weight, lower in cost), improves output and allows for the installation of heavy duty power consumers such as a bow propeller.

Mastervoltís range of converters, main features:

Lightweight.
Very compact.
Efficiency over 85%.
Batteries discharge more gradually.
Less heat production.
Silent, no humming or high frequency noise.
Stable output voltage.
Complete radio suppression.
Very long life-span.
Full protection for expensive connected appliances.
Fully safeguarded electronically.
Most models can be used as a battery charger as well.

The many different uses of the DC-DC converter

The converter can be used in the following ways:

For converting 24V into 12V DC, without battery charger function. To supply navigation, telephone and communication equipment, sound installations, etc. These appliances are all connected to a special 12V group.
For converting 24V into 13.6V DV, with battery charger function. Same application as above, with the 12V appliances connected to a 12V battery.
For converting 12V into 12V DC in order to stabilize it, without battery charger function. To supply navigation/communication equipment and halogen lighting.
For converting 12V into 24V DC, with or without battery charger function. To supply navigation/communication equipment, stabilization, safeguards appliances.
For converting 24V DC to 24V DC for stabilization, with or without battery charger function. For stabilizing voltage (i.e. for halogen lighting) and for galvanic isolation.

What is galvanic isolation?

Simple converter models have a common negative - which does not filter all disturbances. If you want your converter to be completely safe and a guarantee that the DC/out won't be affected by interferences in the supply (= the DC/in), a converter that is isolated both in the DC plus and DC negative line. The input and output are not connected to each other.

Example of an ideal, safe converter (models 8862, 8770, 8771, 8772): the DC output remains stable, independent of DC input.

Model 8661, converts 24V into 12V DC: Voltage flow from Volt/in to Volt/out. If the input is too high, the DC output will be increased to the same extension.

Choose the converter that goes with your system

Mastervolt converters are available in three different versions:

1. Converters with current/voltage regulation;
compatible with all DC power consumers and suitable for use as automatic float charger for 12V starter or navigation batteries, as well as batteries supplying lighting and bow propeller. Model 8870. Also available with galvanic isolation, see models 8862, 8771 and 8772.

2. Converters with voltage regulation;
produces a stable output voltage, even when input is fluctuating. This is the best and safest type of converter to use if you don't need it for charging batteries. Also available with galvanic isolation.

This is the simplest and most cost-effective type of converter.
