Battery Chargers - IVO Smart / Mass Series
For professional and recreational
use
Mastervolt introduces two new battery
chargers: the IVO Compact 12/25-3 and 24/10-2. The
models are fitted in a robust aluminum/Valox enclosure,
suitable for marine, mobile and industrial use! Introduction
to the market is expected for September 2004. Principal
innovations:
• The powerful microprocessor, similar
to the one used in the Mass range, can be programmed
to any relevant protocol, utilizing the IVO Smart
Wizard software, obtainable from the Mastervolt website.
All models can be adjusted for use with gel, AGM or
wet batteries by removing a jumper. This will also
prepare the units for ‘forced float’ operation.
• New is the ‘memory function’, which prevents the
charger starting a new 3-stage charge cycle if the
supply voltage is
interrupted. As a consequence, battery
gassing will be eliminated.
• All models are equipped with a DC high/ low
voltage and AC status alarm as standard, which can be
programmed using the IVO Smart Wizard software.
12/25-3: ideal for marine and mobile
systems
The 12/25-3 is fitted with a temperature
controlled fan and is able to charge three batteries
simultaneously with a maximum charge rate of 25 amps
to two batteries. A third 3A output has to be connected
to the starter battery. All types of batteries can
be charged: gel cells, AGM or wet batteries; even
a combination of both will charge correctly. Another
important feature is the automatic compensation for
low incoming shore power. Even at 180V AC, the charge
current will be at maximum. All models are equipped
with a LED status indicator displaying the stage of
the charge cycle: bulk-absorption-float (battery fully
charged). The 12/25-3 is also fitted with the ‘memory’
function, Mass temperature sensor, alarm functions,
automatic voltage compensation and accessible via
the IVO Smart Wizard software. Quality guaranteed
Like all Mastervolt power electronic products the
IVO Compact range is manufactured to ISO 9000-2001
standards and complies with CE, ABYC, E4 and Kema
(similar to Tüv) and all relevant national standards.
See our website for more details. All models are attractively
packaged with a 4-language manual, an AC cable including
plug, battery cables and two year unlimited world
wide guarantee.
Communication: IVO Compact Data
Control
The IVO Compact battery charger is
delivered with an integrated communication interface
as standard. This makes the system interactive with
the option of reading the most essential information
using your PC or laptop. All that is required to connect
the IVO Compact with your computer is a communication
cable and PC Link (adapter plug).

micro-processor controlled remote panel/battery
consumption meters offers any function you require.
In addition to the charge status indication LED's,
the panel contains an attractive LCD display offering
voltage / current and amp-hour read-out. The System
Manager, dim. 7.8" x 4.7" / 0.15"
thick, is made from aluminum and is MasterVision
compatible. Delivered incl. shunt, connection
cables to be ordered seperately. |

Suitable for global use
Smart battery chargers
have a built-in autoranging function which allows
connection to any electricity system in the world.
The electricity grid in the Caribbean is usually 110V/60Hz,
which is also the standard voltage used in the United
States. Countries like Japan have a different grid
voltage (100V/50Hz). Smart chargers, which can be
connected to any voltage ranging between 90V and 265V
and can operate at 50 as well as 60Hz, are ideal for
a round-the-world cruise. See page 104 for a few practical
tips on 110 to 230V and 50 to 60Hz conversion.
High Power Switch Mode Battery
Chargers
Mastervolt’s range of battery
chargers comprises more than 20 different models.
The IVO Smart series has been developed for the smaller
sized service batteries and can be fixed in place
or used mobile. Mass battery chargers have been developed
especially for larger installations. Both charger
types operate according to the so-called high frequency
technique, in which advanced microprocessors combine
a myriad of functions. All our battery chargers have
a similar effect on the batteries they recharge, whether
service, starter or bowthruster batteries. As a result,
the batteries generate more power, recharge more quickly
and have a longer life.
The high frequency
technique and why it works so well
Until recently people didn’t take
much notice of the type of battery charger they were
using or its so-called charge characteristic. You
bought a battery charger and that was that. In general
you ended up with a half automatic battery charger
operating with a resistance characteristic, meaning
that your batteries were never fully recharged. Mastervolt
introduced the first high frequency or switch mode
battery charger in the early 1990s. The main differences
between these new models and the more conventional
types is that they are light, ultra compact, have
an extremely accurate charge characteristic and, as
they don’t require humming transformers, produce much
less noise. The Mastervolt battery charger shortens
the repeat time to factor 10 with the application
of microprocessor-guided 3-stage charge technology.
The high frequency battery chargers are fitted with
precise DC filtering for suppressing interference
pulses, which lengthens the battery’s life-span and
cuts out all or almost all noise in the electrical
system.
Four reasons why a Mastervolt battery
charger is your best buy
1. Complete and fully automatic
recharging up to 100%
Batteries are vulnerable and,
if used incorrectly, will gradually start generating
less power. A fully automatic Mastervolt battery charger
recharges batteries to 100% with an accurate voltage/current
regulation (see below). Automatic temperature compensation
and pole sense guarantee a super fast and safe charging
process at any temperature.
2. Simultaneous recharging
and supplying
Gone are the days when the lights
went dim every time the fridge switched on. The charger
not only functions as a battery charger but also as
a supply unit that automatically makes up the full
capacity in the 12/24V circuit when the input voltage
is low. The DC outlet of the charger is so ‘clean’
that the appliance can even be used without a battery,
as a direct power source. Standard chargers often
cause interference in navigation and sound equipment,
but Mastervolt’s battery charger generates a minimum
ripple on the outlet, leaving the radio and communication
equipment free of interference. Mastervolt battery
chargers conform to the EMC norms in accordance with
CE regulations.
3. Reliable 'filling stations'
Mastervolt battery chargers automatically
adjust to the prevailing conditions: in winter the
charger will switch itself to the float charge mode,
keeping the batteries in top condition. When there
is little time available for recharging, the Mastervolt
charger quickly switches itself to the BULK stage,
using full current; even when there is growing resistance
in the battery the charge current remains constantly
high. Result: a fully charged battery in the shortest
possible time!
4. Longer life for batteries
With a Mastervolt battery charger
you won’t need to keep replacing old batteries with
new ones. The Mastervolt charge system guarantees
a longer life for maintenance-free sealed batteries
as well as the open lead type. The battery’s capacity
is used much more efficiently as sulphation (i.e.
hardening) of the battery plates, which causes capacity
loss, is kept to a minimum. Your battery will just
keep on going.
Automatic Temperature compensation
Mastervolt’s Smart and Mass battery
chargers are standard fitted with automatic temperature
compensation to eliminate any danger of explosive
oxyhydrogen formation. If the batteries are placed
in a hot engine room, for example, and the temperature
starts rising around them, the charge voltage is automatically
reduced. If the batteries’ temperature remains permanently
high, for example in the engine room, the charger
automatically switches to a nominal voltage. The temperature
sensor, which is supplied as standard with all Mastervolt
chargers, has to be attached to the top or side of
the main (=hottest) battery. See picture
All Mass battery chargers are delivered
as standard with a temperature sensor with 6
meter cable and telejack plug.
